eddy line

Tuesday, Sept. 1-Thursday, Oct. 1

Erika Terwilliger is a visual artist based in Minneapolis. Her practice is driven through labor-intensive techniques where understanding builds through repetition. Labor is only part of the process as the practice is most alive when the fragile materials she works with slump, drip, unravel, and crumble. The work exists across mediums with a through-line in tactile intimacy, repeated failure, and the knowledge that failure builds. Terwilliger received a Bachelor of Arts degree in studio art from St. Olaf College in 2016 and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Minnesota in 2020. During her time at the U of M, she received fellowships to study textile and weaving practices in New York and Dundee, Scotland. She has been selected for various residency programs at the Jentel Foundation, Second Shift Studios, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, and Franconia Sculpture Park. In 2022, she was selected as a recipient of the MCAD Jerome Fellowship for Early Career Artists. Currently, Terwilliger is a lecturer in the University of Minnesota’s sculpture and ceramics department.

eddy line is a new installation by Terwilliger that examines sites of environmental and architectural accumulation. Drawn from branches caught in shifting river currents and dryer vents packed with debris, the work offers a space in limbo between exterior and interior. The exhibition is built from deconstructed ventilation ductwork carefully wrapped around tree branches to form shells of the source. By mapping each turn, split, knot, and texture of the chosen tree in aluminum, the artist presents a handworked transformation of the original. The work holds a material conversation between the natural and constructed world with a bit of breathing room in between.

Public Reception: 4-5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1

Glissandos and Soothsayers

Tuesday, Oct. 6-Monday, Nov. 16

Terry James Conrad is an artist and educator currently serving as the area head of printmaking and Iowa Print Media associate professor at the University of Iowa, where he is also the liaison to Frogman’s Print Workshops. Originally from New York State, Conrad earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Alfred University and his Master of Fine Arts from Cranbrook Academy of Art. He co-founded the Round Lake School — a preschool and artist residency in upstate New York — with his partner Rachel Ziegler-Sheridan, rooted in Reggio Emilia teaching philosophies.

Conrad’s work spans printmaking, tool making, and sound, often emerging through interdisciplinary collaborations. He is currently developing a body of work — prints, instruments, and tools — in partnership with oceanographers Dr. Joan Bernhard and Dr. Catherine Davis, supported by a National Science Foundation Award. This project draws on his experience shadowing scientific teams on Pacific Ocean expeditions.

Conrad’s work is particularly interested in humanities’ trace on the environment. Often referencing the idea of a biomarker, or foreign trace on a body, organism, or landscape. He will discuss a series of excursions of shadowing scientists, learning about their research and lives in their laboratories and out at sea in the Pacific Ocean and other locations. Conrad will share a variety of works that revolve around printmaking themes but delve into sculpture, performance, and musical instrument building.

Public Reception: 4-5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6
Artist Remarks: 4:30 p.m.
